Hardware

Galvanized hardware is widely used for its corrosion resistance and durability, particularly in outdoor and high-moisture environments. Here’s a summary of various types of hardware that commonly come in galvanized finishes:

Hex/Heavy hex nuts

  • Description: Fasteners with internal threads used to secure bolts and screws.
  • Application: Galvanized nuts are often used in construction, automotive, and machinery to ensure strong, rust-resistant connections.
  • Oversized-tapping
    • The primary reason for tapping nuts oversized is to account for the additional thickness added by the zinc coating during the hot-dip galvanizing process. This coating can increase the nominal diameter of the bolt threads, potentially preventing standard nuts from fitting correctly.

Galvanizing Effect

  • Thickness of Coating: The thickness of zinc coating can vary, typically ranging from 2 to 6 mils (0.002 to 0.006 inches), depending on the galvanizing process and specifications. This added thickness can cause the effective diameter of the threads to be larger than that of uncoated bolts.

Washers

  • Description: Thin plates with a hole in the center, used to distribute load and reduce friction between fasteners and surfaces.
  • Application: Galvanized washers are used in conjunction with bolts and screws in outdoor applications, providing protection against corrosion and ensuring tight connections. These can include:
    • Malleable washers
    • Beveled Washers
    • Hillside washers
    • Ogee Washers

Round & square Plates

  • Description: Flat pieces of metal used to provide support or reinforcement.
  • Application: Galvanized plates are often used in structural applications, such as bracing or connecting beams, where strength and corrosion resistance are crucial.

Clevises

  • Description: U-shaped fasteners with a pin used to connect two components.
  • Application: Common in rigging and towing applications, galvanized clevises provide reliable connections that withstand harsh conditions.

Split Rings

  • Description: Circular rings that are split to allow for easy attachment and detachment.
  • Application: Used in various applications for securing components, such as in automotive and machinery assemblies, where corrosion resistance is necessary.

Shear Plates

  • Description: Plates are designed to distribute loads and provide structural support.
  • Application: Galvanized shear plates are used in construction and heavy machinery to enhance stability and reduce wear in load-bearing connections.

Turnbuckles

  • Description: Devices consisting of a metal frame with a screw mechanism that allows for adjusting tension.
  • Application: Galvanized turnbuckles are commonly used in rigging, fencing, and structural support to adjust tension in cables or rods.
